"Hide & Seek" Screening at HDU Deggendorf (Germany)

Dear folks, if you are a filmfella and any where in Germany, please drop by at the HDU Deggendorf University on the 12th of December (Monday Night), for there's a small but really cool screening (Short Movie Night) of dozens of short films from all around the world. My previous work "Hide & Seek" has been selected (big thanks to Philipp Rues and Hugo Chetelat) and is also going to be at the screening, so please feel free to attend the screening event until then.

Audio Test on RODE VIDEOMIC PRO with CANON 600D / T3i (without MAGIC LANTERN)

This is a very silly, little, unscientific test video on sound recording with the Rode VMP connected to Canon 600D /T3i, and "without" the usage of Magic Lantern Firmware. And as I said before, this is very unscientific and totally unorganized so please DO NOT take this too seriously...

The only reason why I wanted to do this video is simply because that I'm pretty curious about the the sound quality of Rode VMP connecting to Canon 600D /T3i, since there are lots of people out there claiming that although 600D / T3i has the manual audio level, but because of the firmware itself isn't as good as the other camera (5D2, 60D, 550D etc.), not to mention after they applied to Magic Lantern firmware...

And so basically what I did was, I did a indoor test and an outdoor test, by setting the Rode VMP to High Pass Filter ON / +20db, and the camera audio level lowered to 1 notch (and 4 notches) above the bottom to see how it performs. Oh and, I also tested "with and without" the dead kitten when shooting outdoor scenes.

I don't want to bias, and neither am I qualified to do so, therefore I'm not going say too much about the conclusion, I'll let you decide whether it's good or bad. But I really think, as long as you use it right (well prepared, right settings, use with cautious etc.), the audio itself is REALLY GOOD. But again, like I said, I would still like to here how you guys think about it~ So let's KICK IT!!

This is a totally UNSCIENTIFIC quick test shoot with the Canon 600D / Rebel T3i / Kiss X5 on the Technicolor Cinestyle picture style profile , and an extremely INCAUTIOUS color correction comparison between the DSLRLog2Video (LUT) & Magic Bullet Looks. So please do not treat anything in here as gospel. I don't therefore neither should you...

Anyway, the main reason for doing this test video is that I've just got in hand of my new 600D, and so just wanted to try it out and see how it performs in "real world". Oh and, also wanted to test the new DSLRLog2Video (LUT) FCP FXPlug plug-in (FREE) which has been released by a German based company Pomfort, and see whether it works perfectly with the Technicolor Cinestyle picture style.

As you can see clearly from the images above, the DSLRLog2Video LUT (LookUpTable) works beautifully with the Technicolor Cinestyle, and tends to emphasis on the shadows quite a lot, so the whole image also tends to move towards into the shadow(s) area (black), however you can still see all the the tiny details, and also have the abilities to crush the blacks as you may prefer. Oh and, what's so great about this plug-in is that you don't need to go through the "manual LUT" switching from this to that nightmare, it works perfectly (drag and drop) in FCP!! BTW~ let's not forget that it's ABSOLUTELY FREE!! (as for now...)

Since this is a beta version, we have no words about whether Pomfort would still release it for free after July 9th, according to their site... (HOPEFULLY~)

FXPlug Plug-in For Cinestyle In FCP

As the "Technicolor Cinestyle Wave" rouses the whole DSLR film communities, we finally see a new "light" of solution that could actually avoid us on going through the horrible manual handling nightmare of a LUT (LookUpTable).

A German based company, Pomfort released a beta of their free "DSLRLog2Video" plug-in for Final Cut Pro just a few days ago.

This Plug-in allows you to convert the "flat look" of Cinestyle material to Rec.709 in realtime. Built as a GPU-based FxPlug plug-in for FCP users preview their material without the manual handling of a LUT. The company even claims the image processing of the DSLRLog2Video plug-in is derived from Technicolor's LUT coming with the picture style, but offers "true" 10-bit support for much higher precision compared to the original LUT.

First of all, SORRY for DISAPPEARING!!

Cos I needed to finish my "Film Story" (webisode) script right after wraping up the festival tour in Taiwan, so.....
But YES, so far so good, I've finally finished the draft version of it, and trying to get some feedbacks, so that I could polish it into a final peice of work. Hopefully we can get into production by the end of May. I'll TRY keep you guys updated... I'll TRY......

As for now, please check out this video clip that I've work on for the past 5 DAYS!! (THANK GOD IT'S FINISHED!! I thought I could hav died in front of my new Macbook Pro....) 5D Mark III With 4:2:2 at 50Mbps??

Here's a great interview done by Cinema5D with Tim Smith (Canon USA) at the Cine Gear Expo, talking about the future and possibilities of 5D Mark III adopting (or come up with something else) the codec of XF300/XF305 (professional video camera), which happens to feature with MPEG 2, variant 4:2:2 colour encoding at up to 50Mbps.

So, just have to wait and see...

Think Brave, Be Brave- BRAVE NEW THEATERS!

After months and months of preparation, shoots and edits, and FINALLY we've finished our "little precious", what should we do next? Put it on your book shelf and stack it like any other films that we'd made before?! HELL NO!! We ought to expose it to the public as much as we can! But talking about exposure~ What the hell can I do? I'm just a nobody (not to mention penniless...), with non resources and connections, how am I suppose to get my film out there with out any BIG BOYS help (middleman/distributors)?

When life gives you lemon make lemonade of course! Why don't just DIY (Do It Yourself)~!? Since the whole film industry/environment has changed massively, we're no longer in the era which filmmakers can only rely on big studios, kissing their a** and still don't make a nickel from theatrical screenings, and assume that we're "LUCKY" enough to even get a distribution deal. Uh sorry, did you just said deal?! C'mon, give me a break! That's no deal! A "deal" is only when you get "$$" for "exchanging", "selling" (or whatsoever terms you wanna use) your film.

So what am I suppose to do if I'm on my own? Obviously, there is no way I can make any money in theaters... Yea I know, make a website, sell DVD's (VOD), sell 1 DVD and that's 1 "paycheck" I get, I've heard that millions times... But what if I don't get any traffic on my site? How am I suppose to maximize my public screenings to drive publicity for my film?

Well, to be honest~ There are lots of indie friendly distributors out there, but today I'm just gonna talk about the BRAVE NEW THEATER. Brave New Theater is world's very first people-powered movie distributor, that provides world changers like you with with films and organizing tools to bring attention to, raise money for, it allows you (your film) to tap into millions of flat screen televisions in living rooms across the world.

Film Of The Week: God Is D_ad

God Is D_ad is an award winning feature length film written and directed by Abraham Lincoln Lim, which is about this comic book store clerk called Tim, who gathers together a group of misfits to fund his trip to the Dungeons and Dragons tournament in Chicago. However, when they find themselves lost in the back roads of the midwest, Tim entertains them with the story of his dark world.

It's always great to have companions, while touring through festivals, and I was lucky enough to be accompanied by Abraham at the Asia Pacific Film Festival. Anyway, here's a video clip of us at the festival:

Finally Published!! COMPACT CAMERA BIBLE

As you can see, this is the book which I've been working on (translating Korean→Chinese) for the past 2 months, and finally~ I get to see it being published today....

This is a photographer's guide by a famous Korean photographer, BYUN Hyun-Woo. But what makes this book so different is that, instead of spreading the knowledge of shooting good photos with a DSLR, it teaches you various techniques of by simply just using a compact camera and how you can make a masterpiece out of "snap shots".... (Sounds koool~ isn't it?)

It basically explains (to new camera users) the knowledge and skills how to operate your aperture, shutter, ISO and exposures correctly and easily. What's more, the book actually picks out 10~20 popular compact camera models such as the Sigma DP2, Panasonic LX3, Nikon S620, Canon Sx200IS etc. and shows the function, aspects with text and pictures all together. So that readers can pick up easily and build their skills on BYUN's experience.

But I have to say, I'm very glad that this whole thing has finally come to an end since it has pulled me away from the preparation of my feature film project for more than 2 months. Anyway, I would like to thank my editor Amber Hwan who has always been very kind and supportive, so that I could actually finish the whole translation on time. New Final Cut Pro 8 Coming This Spring 2011

Finally!! We get to see some LIGHTS coming out of Apple's WICKED BLACK HOLE (obsessed to these little gadgets updates like iPad, iPhone and iWhatsoever...), claiming that there will be a massive overhaul to Final Cut Pro, which you can say the BIGGEST change to the software since it was launched 10 years ago. Also said to have a massive interface changes and a BRAND NEW 64bit codebase. (BIG THANKS to Steve Jobs for finally stop ignoring the little stepbrother- FCP)

Anyway, according to TechCrunch, Apple are testing Final Cut Pro 8 with numbers of video professionals.

"According our very own people familiar with the matter, a small group of video editors were on the Apple campus recently in order to preview the new version of video editing software, which is in the same space as Avid and Adobe Premiere. Apparently Apple is still putting the finishing touches on “the biggest overhaul to Final Cut Pro since the original version was created over 10 years ago”and wanted pro user feedback. Emphasis on “pro.”

One source described the new release as encompassing everything from low level architectural changes to a complete redesign of the user interface. It’s safe to say the newest version will be 64 bit as that’s what users have clamored the most for."

Hopefully we'll see this new baby coming very soon, since Apple plans on releasing the new product in Spring 2011, in a launch possibly coinciding with the National Association of Broadcasters conference.

Unbelievably, she not only gets to meet her dead father, who happens to lead her into a fantastic journey back to her childhood, but also gets to learn the meaning of life which forces her facing up to the facts of her fears and unfulfilled wishes.

GREAT NEWS! Fellow filmmaker friend Nils Clauss and Neil Dowling had recently won BEST VIDEO for the song SENIOR LIVING within the Royksopp music video competition.

"CONTENTed's film was an obvious winner in this category for us. There was an idea of ‘Senior Living’ and not just a piece of music to sound-bed a narrative and what’s not to like about a video with a Ferrari in it! Obviously the access to talent or a budget helped this accomplished piece of film but it was well thought out and had a real sense of the off the wall humour that can often be seen in some of Royksopp’s projects. This piece has good characterisation - although maybe one too many lollipops – that you could really buy into and the narrative was enthralling from the start to the finish of the piece. It also used the city as a great set for this story to help create a style for the whole piece."

Chan-Wook PARK's New Work Shot on iPhone 4

The Award winning South Korean director Chan-wook Park (Old Boy, 2003) revealed that his new thirty minute short, Paranmanjang (AKA "Night Fishing"), was shot entirely on an Apple iPhone 4. Here's what he had to say about the process:

The new technology creates strange effects because it is new and because it is a medium the audience is used to. There are some good points of making a movie with the iPhone as there are many people around the world who like to play and have fun with them."

Paranmanjang, which translates in English to "Life full of ups and downs," centers on a man who catches a woman in the river while he is fishing at night. When they both become tangled up in the line, he believes she is dead, although she wakes up and strangles him before passing out. When the woman wakes up, though, she is wearing the man's clothes and he is wearing hers.

The film was shot on 2 iPhone 4 with DSLR lenses and the use of ALMOST DSLR (an application for iPhone), and shot in different angles. But since almost the entire crew owes an iPhone 4, everyone shot the their own footage from their own "point of view", and hand out their video files in post production for PARK to use in edit (some interesting shots, surprisingly...).

Chan-Wook PARK made the horror-thriller with his brother, Chan-kyong PARK, on a small budget of $133,000, a crew of 80 people, and was finished (shoot) in ten days. The directors simply attached different lenses to their iPhones to shoot the movie.

Paranmanjang will be shown in South Korean theaters on January 27. It isn't known when the short will be shown in America.

"Hide & Seek" Nominated In 4 Categories at the Golden Harvest Awards

To be honest, although I've DREAMED about getting into the Golden Harvest Awards, but I've never thought that I'd actually GET IN... Not to mention running 4 categories (Best Film, Best Director, Best Script, Best Edit)

Since it's the biggest award festival for independent films in Taiwan (Ang Lee, Tsai Ming-liang, and lots of other Taiwanese filmmakers all made their debut after receiving the award from here), I feel very honored to take part in this major event. I know I've said this before, but pls let me say it again~

Thank you everyone who participated in this film and shared your supports and love with me! I'm very blessed to have you all in my life!! Thank you all!! LOVE YOU!!

Meanwhile, I'm planning to shoot a mini webisode about teenagers dealing with the frustration in their youth life, family, friends, and discovering the feeling of LOVE (okok, I know it's cheesy, I got ur point..), as a pilot for my feature length film this year. Asia Pacific Film Festival 2010 (Taipei, Taiwan)

Just came back from Taipei 2 days ago, great people, great weather, great food, and GREAT FESTIVAL TOO!

(Me receiving award for "ENLIGHTENMENT FILM")

This year, I attended the festival as head of delegation (Korea), presenting 2 feature length films ("MAGIC", directed by the famous K-pop star KOO Hye-Sun; "ENLIGHTENMENT FILM" directed by PARK Dong-Hoon) and 5 short films. Luckily, one of the short film which I'd produced and shot also made it's way to the finals~! However, it was "ENLIGHTENMENT FILM" which gained all the spot lights and attentions, since it'd won BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (OH Woo-Jung) & BEST SCREENPLAY (PARK Dong-Hoon, PARK Nam-Hui), total of 2 awards! CONGRATS!!

"ENLIGHTENMENT FILM" talks about three generations of a family which spans from the Japanese colonial period to present. Tae-Sun's grandfather was part of a pro-Japanese group during the colonial period, and her father was dictatorial during the neo-military era in the 1980's; While Tae-Sun, being a daughter and the third generation of her family, is portrayed as a character who wants to deny everything about her family. The film suggests self-examination of Korean modern history effectively compressed within the family history and family relationships, and symbolically concludes with the situation where the door of the old house requires a change.

I don't what I've done for getting a reaaaaallly shitty bad day yesterday.... Couldn't finish our animation project shoot, late for award ceremony (got there when my award was just handed out...), spent total of 6 hours in commuting from the festival and back home (in Seoul?!?! Give me a break....), my LED ring light BLAST while shooting these photos, another MAJOR SHxT happened right afterwards (can't tell on the net, so tweet me if you wanna know....), and plus MUCH MUCH MORE!!! (I almost killed myself yesterday.... Thank God no one was near or else... =.=")

Well, anyway,,, Still happy to receive an award, though not the grand prize (God, that's a lot of money....@@").

Although it's not a big festival (or big prize), but still meant a lot to me, since it was my first Korean film. Despite going to other bigger festivals oversea, but this is the FIRST festival which was held on the soil of Korea that I got into.... (So touched.....^^")

Anyhow, hope this isn't the END of "Hide & Seek"'s festival tour~! (Fingers crossed)

Taiwan Cinema Party at PIFF 2010!!

Just came back from PIFF (Pusan International Film Festival) few days ago, though exhausted, it was a BLAST!!! On behalf of Taipei Film Commission, I was lucky enough to be the MC of Taiwan Cinema Party for 2 years. Anyway, more than 300 guests (including Taiwanese Director HOU Hsiao-Hsien, TSAI Ming-Liang, DP Mark LEE, Award Winning Actress YANG Kuei-Mei, Korean Famous Actress KIM Yun-Jin, Japanese Costume Designer Emi WADA, Indian Filmmaker Murali Nair etc.)and worldwide medias (Screen、Variety、Film Business Asia、The Hollywood Reporter etc.) came from around the world just to celebrate and to show their respects to Mr. KIM Dong-Ho, the founder (chairman) of PIFF, who has also declared his retirement recently.

Since it's the last year for Mr. KIM to execute and program the festival, the concept of party was kind of like a "farewell party". In addition, the Taiwanese government GIO, Taipei Mission in Korea also dedicates a special gift from the National Palace Museum of Taiwan-- A 999 Gold Horse Portrait, to Mr. KIM as an appreciation for his contribution in Taiwan Cinema for the past 15 years (introducing young talented Taiwanese filmmakers into PIFF). However, the highlight of the night was when YANG Kuei-Mei dedicates a Korean old pop song "I LOVE YOU" to Mr. KIM, not only the crowd went wild, but also Mr. KIM himself ran up stage and danced with YANG.

As you all know, Nikon FINALLY listens to it's fans screaming out there for a more "promising" DSLR, by releasing the new mid-level D7000 (which sits between the D90 & D300s) about two days ago.

The D7000 offers a NEW 16.2 Megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor, NEW image-processing engine "EXPEED 2", 6 fps shooting, wide sensitivity range of ISO 100-6400, 39-Point AF focus system and 1080p HD movie with FULL TIME AUTO FOCUS!!!

What's good about this camera is that, not only does it have a dual SD card slots for increased write speeds of RAW & JPEG, but also up-leveled the 12 minute clip length to 20 minute in video mode. 24p in 1080p mode and 24p/30p in 720p mode (no 60p at all, what a bummer). However, no 25p for PAL....

Though the D7000 is set to be a camera that sits between D90 & D300s, there are certain points that the D7000 oversteps the D300s obviously. Sony Announced NEW A55/A33/A560/A580

Sony just made an official announcement back at 6am London time (GMT), which happens to be just a few hours ago, with it's amazing "pellicle style" camera -- A55/A33.

The new system uses a translucent mirror that "splits" the optical pathway between the main image and a separate phase-detection autofocus, which basically means that it could offer autofocus at all time during LIVE VIEW (via swivel 3-inch LCD screen on the back or the electronic viewfinder). By the way, it also allows them to SHRINK the camera size in which to complete with the Micro 3/4 models.

The new A55 allows users to shoot 10 frames per second (while A33 shoots in 7 frames per second), which means it's the "fastest" APS-C size sensor camera you can get on this planet (at least for now...). Both camera provides 3D Sweep panorama, anti-shake, and ISO setting up to 25600.

New Director Reel 2010!!

Since I've been tossing some feature length projects to several film markets and production companies recently, the most commonly requests I got were: "can we see some of your works?". Obviously~ I had to do some edits on my previous works, and give them the right materials which they "WANT" (since different projects have different strategies...). However, back in the old days, I used to give out my complete films to clients, so that they could see my FULL ABILITIES as a filmmaker, but after hearing some downsides of doing so, I finally decided to make a short combination demo reel of my works. Though it isn't the first time making a director's reel, I some how wanted to RENEW my stuffs, at least the works I've done during 2009-2010, and so this is when my NEW director's reel shows up!

PS. This demo reel also includes the cinematography works I've done, such as short film Qing-Ming, Affair, There's Something About LaLa, etc.

Another example of high production value with the DSLR

So yea... I've been away AGAIN for quite a while, I KNOW... But um, you've always been on my mind, pu~ :)

Anyway, I've been working on my independent feature script, a film treatment for PPP (Pusan Promotion Plan) and of cause, running back and forth to the institute. So basically, that's the brief REPORT of what I've been up to recently.

But that's not important anyway, the reason why I'm here today is because I wanna share another GREAT example of shooting a high production value film with a DSLR, the film is called Momentos (view on Vimeo), made by a talented Portuguese filmmaker Nuno Rocha. The main point of watching this video is to check out the method and especially the ATTITUDE of how they made this film so good (the making of Momentos), although lot of indie filmmakers complain that since the DSLR's are so cheap to afford, now even their middle aged dentist neighbor or a six-grade cousin can make a FILM out of it, which kind of pisses them off. But what I'm trying to say is that, it's not what equipments you own (or use), it's HOW you use it (creative and attitude) which makes the BIG DIFFERENCE of an art work and a home video...

If you're a big fan of EOSHD I'm sure you all already know what I'm gonna talk about. YES!! A major BREAK THROUGH by Andrew Reid! Like the Magic Lantern Firmware (by Tramm Hudson) it gives us an amazing feature to upgrade our Canon EOS's, and yet, unlike the Magic Lantern, instead of releasing "Firmware Updates", Andrew Reid just simply teaches us some "basic settings" which eventually allows our crapy little GH1 turn into a KILLING MONSTER!! (50Mbit 1080p MJPEG)

Tester13 is responsible for the custom firmware development over at DVXUser, and the MJPEG settings here are from my own testing. This article mainly concerns the MJPEG 50Mbit but for the full-lowdown on Tester13's great work, 43Rumors has a great summary / introduction. Hats off to Tester13!

The GH1 can now do 50Mbit 1080p MJPEG and the quality is astounding. It isn't quite 100% robust yet, certain types of shot can halt recording. But it's very usable as you can see from the video above.

At the temple shoot today, I was able to complete 70% of the shots using 50Mbit MJPEG 1080p,and fell back on 32Mbit AVCHD for the rest. The video above contains no footage from the out-of-the-box GH1. It's all a mixture of 50Mbit MJPEG 1080/30p and the new 32Mbit AVCHD 1080p native 24p MTS files.

I have not yet had time to perfect my settings for reliability, only for sheer image quality. So this is where you come in. Try out the settings yourself, have fun shooting, and keep testing small adjustments in a systematic way to discover what works and what doesn't.

The quickest way to see the bitrate of a MJPEG clip you've recorded is to open it in Quicktime and turn on Movie Inspector. My clips vary between 28MBit and 50Mbit. MJPEG is recorded in variable bitrate format on the GH1. Any higher than 52Mbit and the camera cuts off recording half way through a clip. We need to find a way to limit the 50Mbit variable bitrate MJPEG to a maximum of 50Mbit, no matter how much details is packed into the shot and how sharp the lens is. I am confident this can be done and I believe Tester13 is getting closer to enabling a true 24p framerate for MJPEG mode.

In Quicktime, I can see that the camera has recorded clips that hover around the 45 or 50Mbit mark just fine but a few clips which stop after 1 or 2 seconds are hitting the 70Mbit point!! This is too high for 1080p with this kind of dynamic range and detail from the GH1's amazing sensor. The camera's buffer and card IO controller just isn't built to support this kind of data throughput.

The working 50Mbit footage is cleaner than even the 5D Mark II or 7D. The 5D Mark II records at 35Mbit per second. That's 4.8MB/sec to the card, to get that 30MB/sec claim by Sandisk in perspective. I tested my Sandisk 30MB/sec edition. It does about 20MB/sec in real usage - i.e, copying a large file from a PC to the card. I've had clips off the GH1 which have been written to the card by the camera at over 8MB/sec, almost double the 5D Mark II's rate.

For certain shots , usually always deep depth of field stuff with the lens stopped down, I got a card write error and had to fall back on the new 32Mbit AVCHD mode by Tester13 to get the shot.

I was able to use the Vari ND to get a shallower depth of field, and an image that isn't quite as sharp. This helped limit bitrate so that it didn't overflow the camera's buffer. I used a class 6 as well as the class 10 Sandisk. You don't actually need a super expensive Class 10 SDHC card. The card is not the bottleneck, even for 50bit footage - the camera's buffer is. So we need to find that limiter setting.

Another plus is that the GH1 is doing a better job of scaling and processing data from the sensor than the 5D Mark II because it isn't line-skipping when scanning the sensor. Instead it bins individual pixels - just like when you downsize an image in Photoshop. It has a lower resolution sensor by half, so it has CPU time left over to do more work on scaling and encoding. At these high bit-rates, it's footage is beginning to look like what we were expecting from 2nd generation DSLRs that aren't yet released. It will also give the AF100 a run for it's money. Panasonic must not be too pleased about the hack, if they know!

MJPEG is not as modern or as efficient as the 5D Mark II's H.264 with disk space, but as the name 'JPEG' would suggest, when JPEG goes to the movies it's capable of producing just as good results as it can do with photographs. At high bitrates it shows hardly any noticeable compression or artefacts. H.264 on the 5D Mark II shows more compression. In fact, 50Mbit MJPEG on the GH1 is virtually in ProRes league.

Because of Microsoft's ridiculous legacy file format FAT which is still in use all over the world, all cameras have a 2GB size limit on individual files. So when a clip reaches 2GB, it has to either span seamlessly onto a 2nd file or recording must stop. Like the 5D Mark II, the GH1's high bitrate MJPEG has a 2GB limit on each clip, and you can record as many clips as you can fit on your card.

Such is the quality of the footage and the low compression and low efficiently of MJPEG, clips are limited to just 3 minutes each before they hit 2GB.

My GH1 reports a maximum clip length of 2m 39sec in 50Mbit 1080p MJPEG mode before recording begins. During tests I've seen as high as 8 minutes for reduced bitrates. But because 50Mbit clips are actually recorded with a variable bit rate depending on the shot, the actual running length of a clip may be higher or lower, depending on the amount of detail in the scene.

Personally speaking, a 3 minute clip length limit doesn't usually affect my kind of shooting style, and it shouldn't be a problem for most narrative filmmaking either.

It must be said that all this wonderful leap in quality is not going to be as noticable in a small window on a webpage. The 50Mbit MJPEG comes into it's own on a large cinema screen, or decent Plasma TV. Yes, you notice the difference on a PC too (full screen) - it's MUCH cleaner looking and more detailed. I suggest at the very least, to download the footage from Vimeo and play this on a TV.

Until then I have completed the short film above and uploaded a sample of the raw 50Mbit MJPEG 1080p footage to Vimeo. Don't view this on Vimeo, click the download link and you'll have the original .MOV file straight from my GH1 and see for yourself that it's true 50Mbit footage at 1080p!

Hopefully this article will give you some idea of what a great leap the GH1 has made. But wait until you see the head-to-head comparisons of the various formats - they're mindblowing.

Summary, what is means for the none-techno-geek

Hugely better image quality. 50MBit MJPEG shows zero compression artefacts, zero mud and much more photo-like gradients, tones and textures
It's better looking than the 5D Mark II's H.264 and less compressed
MPEG 50Mbit shows low noise and the noise is of a finer grain, more film-like
The workflow improvements are immeasurable. The 50Mbit MJPEG, this can be edited directly, no transcoding required. As for AVCHD, thanks to Tester13 the native 24p can go straight into Log & Transfer without pulldown or deinterlacing work. Before I was waiting around 6 or 7 hours per project for Voltaic to transcode and deinterlace the GH1's AVCHD to ProRes. Now the same amount of footage can be done in one step in Final Cut Pro Log & Transfer and takes 30 minutes.
Non-native 24p 32Mbit AVCHD (60i) can be played back in-camera. Focus assist works in both AVCHD and MJPEG mode. It's expected playback of native 24p AVCHD can be fixed in the near future once a patch is released by Abed.
A JPEG is saved containing shot EXIF info, shutter speed, ISO, etc.
The image is smoother looking and better scaled from the 12MP CMOS compared to the 5D Mark II which has 22MP to deal with. Pixel binning is in action, not line skipping.

Sorry for not updating the blog recently, cos I was busy shooting another short film and also doing some editing work and writing.... But I still owe you guys a apology~ So SORRY LOL....

Anyway, just wanna let you guys know that I AM working on stuffs, so here you go~

This work is part of a directing class project, which I'd been restricted to shoot with 1 man, 1 woman, 1 object (cellphone), 1 emotion, no dialogue and also had to finish the shoot within 2 hours. To be honest, it was a mess! But it's also a very good experience! Cos you NEVER get to shoot smoothly like you planned on schedule, why? SHIT HAPPENS!! So anyway, this project challenges fellow filmmakers to fix problems right on set and try get all the coverages as you can in a very limited of time. Shot on Canon 7D with Tokina 24-40mm 1:2.8 72mm lens. ISO set to 160, picture style Super Flat. Edited in FCP and color graded in AE.

DSLR Feature - City of Lakes

Another tremendous work done by the amazing talented Kevin Shahinian! As we all know, Kevin is well known for his concept wedding films (especially his previous master piece "SNOW")which are so bloody good that no one believes until they actually see them.

Anyway, what I like to say is that if you think "SNOW" is already too good to be true, I can only tell you that "City of Lakes" is going to blast your mind....

The film is combined with live event (wedding ceremony), conviction and drama, kind of like a mixture of documentary and fiction. The whole film was shot with Canon 5D Mark II and 7D in India.

The initial inspiration for “City of Lakes” came from my conversations with the bride, Melissa, when she first told me she had been dreaming of a wedding in India ever since she was a young girl. From there, the entire concept was developed. As the story began to take shape, I looked to find ways to incorporate the beauty of the Hindu faith and make the rituals of a Hindu wedding more accessible to a western audience, so much of those traditions informed certain scenes like the opening, the character of Harish, the necklace itself (a pendant of Ganesh), and the recurrence of the priest. It’s often easier to understand metaphors, so much of the children’s journey was developed in this way. As the title of the film suggests, Udaipur and the palaces at Lake Pichola also lent a great deal of inspiration to the story, in terms of establishing a larger than life setting where anything is possible.

Over all:
To be honest, each of these cameras can be look as a "KILLER CLASS" gadget, the only thing that matters is what you really NEED. For example, if we analyze them with marketing settings, the 550D would be consumer level, while 7D is a semi pro level, and as for 5D2 and 1D4, both cameras are marked as the pro level. At this point, I'm sure that there are lots of people out there questioning the value and advantages of the 7D, since the 550D has got nearly almost all the same features that a 7D owns, and costs even less than a 7D (almost half price), who the hell on earth would be stupid enough to buy a 7D!? I don't wanna be a A**hole, but what I'm trying to say is that: YES, the 550D IS a total "UNCONSUMER LIKE" consumer level DSLR, BUT!! When it comes to "future Improvements", it will not stand a chance to compete with the 7D. Why? Just to give you and idea, 550D has only 1 processor (Digi4), while the 7D has 2 Digi4 processors. Therefore, we can expect the feature firmware improvements from a 7D way more than the 550D. As for Video/Still feature set ups, the 7D obviously stands for the advantages of HD video performance, while we can see the 5D2 and the 1D4 as a PRO Still Camera, as for the 550D...
Anyway, to keep it short and clear! Rather than "which camera is better?", INSTEAD, "which camera is suitable for me?" would be a better expression to use. If you are professional photographer who works for the press or who is fond of high speed/extreme sports, 1D4 would definitely be your one and only choice! If you make a living as a serious photographer, please consider 5D2 as your truly partner! As for independent film makers who mainly uses the camera for video shoot, 7D would be your best buy! While if you're just starting to learn more about Video/Still or even film students, the 550D is one hell of a camera!

Honey~ I'm Home!

Got back to Seoul 2 days ago, I can only say that it (trip to China) was a BLAST! Overall, the shoot went on great (although shit happened...), I was hospitalized for 2 days due to bronchitis, but I also get to meet an old friend (we lost connections to each other for the past 7 years ).

Basically, We shot most of the film in a small village which was located in Yangchong, Jiangsu Province. The scenery was beautiful but unfortunately the weather condition was awful. Anyway, we were lucky enough to work with 3 good actors, which really helped a lot on set, since we had a REALLY TIGHT schedule! It's a low budget film (short), with small crew (1 Director, 1 DP, 1 Mixer, 1 PD, 2 Assistants), shot on a Canon 7D. Thanks again to everyone who helped on/off set during the shoot, we couldn't have done it without all your help! TAHNK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

One thing that did drove me crazy was the shoot at Nanjing Train Station. The scene was about the two main characters saying goodbye to each other under the sunset, a very important scene in the film, and which suppose to be ROMANTIC! But!!! due to the "human nature" of Chinese the scene was a nightmare to me. While I was changing my lens, I thought: "why is it so dark all of a sudden?" As soon as I lift my head up I found that I was crowded. We were surrounded by more than 400 "EXTRAS" (pedestrians) that just stood there and watch us shoot. It's OK with me if they watch us silently from a distance. Instead, they came so close that we couldn't even move our camera and characters. What's more, they took photos with flashlights NONE STOP! TALKING! Even ask to shake hands (ask for autographs) with the actors. At first, we ask them to leave us alone politely, but they just wouldn't listen, so we got so mad that we couldn't help but yelling at them to step aside (Again, Sorry Folks). Surprisingly, they step aside for approximately 15 seconds and then came back closer with "SMILES" on their faces. Eventually, I gave up on them and said as long they stand behind the camera, they are "welcome" to stay with us.......

Anyway, we all felt happy with the result and hopefully we can release the film by this summer. Until then, please stick with us for the latest updates.

Some people say "EDIT" is just A TERM of "SCISSORS & GLUE", well I can tell you - that is NOT TRUE!! A lot of films were shot poorly on set (especially in student films), due to the lack of preparations (Pre-Production). While in this case, EDIT would be your only hope for "MIRACLE". Not only that it can save your original story up to 50%, but it can also reform a whole new story by deconstructing it then re-constructing it.

Editing is a way to form a narrative temporally, both in the making and the viewing of a film. While Montage is a technique in film editing in which a series of shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time and information. It's usually used to suggest the passage of time, rather than to create symbolic meanings as it does in Soviet Montage Theory, in which Sergei Eisenstein refers to the COLLISION THEORY in his great film of The Battleship Potemkin.

Before film footage's are edited, they are just a collection of individual "CLIPS" without any connection and emotion. Only through the editing process in which gives the images a specific meaning and intention, that also creates a "LIFE" to the film.

Somehow, we can say that editing is "THE MOTIVE" of filmmaking.

Shoot in Nanjing

I'll be away for 9 days (April 10-18) in Nanjing to shoot a short film (as DP) by fellow director friend Y.J Cai. This is also my very first trip to CHINA, so I'm kind of looking forward to see what's it like over there. I heard from the director saying that there're some problems occurred that MIGHT be a threat to the shoot, (due to the lack of preparation in PRE-PRODUCTION) but he'd already taking care of it so hopefully everything will turn out fine.... (HOPEFULLY)

Anyway, here's a short TEST SHOOT clip edit that was shot with a 7D (Superflat picture style), edit with FCP (No Gradings..)

5DMarkII 2.0.4 Firmware Bug!!

It has been revealed by numerous of 5DM2 users that when using the Canon EF 100mm F2.8 Macro USM lens in manual focus mode the iris/aperture changes on "it's own", this problem happens in both still and video mode.

EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro

It's about time, FINALLY we see Canon doing some real ACTION on EOS movie workflow (post-production), by releasing the EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for FCP (Final Cut Pro) which allows you to convert your H.264 files into all flavors of Apple Pro Res in FCP 7 and Apple Pro Res 422 and HQ in FCP 6. Plus, it also gives you a time code based on the camera (date & time stamp), you can even TRIM your footage but setting IN/OUT POINTS when transcoding. But what's best about this plugin is that it's totally FREE!!!

Firmware Version 2.0.3(4) incorporates five enhancements to the movie function and a fix to the manual sensor cleaning function of the EOS 5D Mark II camera.

Adds or changes the following movie frame rates.

NTSC: 1920×1080 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
640×480 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)

PAL: 1920×1080 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)

Canon releases 24p for 5D Mark II

7D Users: What The F...

The minute that Canon announced the Rebel T2i, AKA the 550D, all 7D users around the world went on MAD (pissed actually). Although this isn't the first time that Canon's announced pisses 7D users (last time was about the 24p firmware update for 5D Mark II), but the announcement of 550D really hammered 7D users right on the head (and their 7D...). Why? Not only it's an 18 megapixel entry-level DSLR, which features all of the video modes of the Canon 7d and 1D Mark IV: 29.97, 23.976, and 25 fps at 1080p, along with 50 and 60 fps at 720, but also cost only the half price of 7D ($799).
Some 7D users claimed that now this super cheap HDSLR (55oD) is available out there, what they are going see is that their freaking dentist neighbor shooting wicked HD movies with only $700 (Uh,, no comments on that...). To be honest, I felt the same in the beginning, but on second thought, I was quite happy to see this camera coming out. Because this 550D is actually part of the consumer line camera, but the 7D is part of the pro line, which simply means-- If a consumer line camera can do this much, a pro line camera can do (must be) better!! So chill out guys~ wait for your main course...

As the largest Korean film festival in the United States, KOFFLA was first launched in 2007 by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). With the local community's support, the festival successfully introduced diverse genres of Korean cinema to American audiences. Beginning in 2010, KOFFLA will re-emerge under the Korean Cinematheque, a non-profit organization that helps to bridge the gap between Hollywood and the Korean film industry as well as the Korean and the Korean-American community through the medium of film and visual arts.
I have to say that it's a real honor to participate in this major event, and I feel really lucky, thrilled and thankful. I never thought of the film (Hide & Seek) would get this far (its 3rd Fest. in 6 months after production), hopefully NEXT STOP we could head back into the domestic major film festivals...

Make Movies With iPhone (iPod Touch)

I hate to admit that Apple is really making "junkies" out filmmakers worldwide (addicted to their product, especially iPhone....). People liked their iPhone when it was simply just a phone (well it's always nice to have camera, surfing the internet, check on this and that etc.), but why rock the boat by coming up with these fancy and deadly attractive application softwares!!?? ("POOR" indie filmmakers....)

Well, as we all know about the Storyboard Composer (formerly Hitchcock) which is really cool to have one, even my friends went on buying a iPhone just because of it (you SPOILED KIDS!!). Anyway, today I found this really cool "application" made by the BLACK MANA STUDIOS, and this time....... It's a SCREENPLAY software... (Bon Voyage $$$ ><")

It's the world's very first fully-functional mobile screenwriting application, it not only allows you to write complete movie and television screenplays directly on an iPhone, but also works perfectly on an iPod Touch.

So what do you think? Who knows, maybe someday I could ask my iPhone to make a mediterranean breakfast for me in bed XD

Back From Asia Pacific Film Festival

I have to say that this was a great experience to attend the 53th APFF, even though I didn't win any prize (As I expected..), but I still had a wonderful time!

By the way, this is the third film festival that I get to travel with Abe (Abraham Lim), and I have to admit that traveling around the festivals with a friend is totally AWESOME!!! We always had a BLAST in the festivals! Hopefully we can go on like this for a while~

I also get to meet a lot of friends and filmmakers there, Sameer Handhate, Bonnie Kwan, Vicky, Brillante Mendoza, John Wu~ Everyone were so nice!! And the staffs were also very nice to us! Thank you everyone!!

Too Good To Be True~ @@"

Uh, yeah... Shucks... I dun know what to say... Just kinda lucky i guess^^"

My previous and latest works, 〈Way Back Into Purity。Taipei〉 & 〈Hide & Seek〉 were lucky enough to be accepted to this years Asia Pacific Film Festival, which will be held in Taiwan around mid December. Honestly, I really dun care whether if my films will do "well" (awarded) or not in the festival, cos getting into the festival is already "TOO" satisfying to me~ I'M NOT A GREEDY MAN!!! I know just how much I can chew...... (well ya~ it will be great if I...) but I definitely won't cry over it~ THat's for SURE!!

But then again, I wasn't even confident about 〈Hide & Seek〉 getting into the festival (or any other), cos there were many "problems" popping out during the shoot, which also happened to became a "THREAT' in Post. Well anyway~ as a result, I really wasn't that happy with this film... (Quit being sorry man!) But like I said, you get what you give. And since it's all DONE, and you can't do anything but to live with it, might as well just be happy with what you have now!

So, ya~ I'm really happy to see that 〈Hide & Seek〉 getting into it's first film festival (hope it's not the last...@@"), and also happy for 〈Way Back Into Purity。Taipei〉 ~(since it is its second film Fest.). Overall, I just wanna thank everyone who had supported me through out these two films (crew, actors, supervisors, family etc.), cos if weren't you guys out there for me, there will be NO FILM at all!!

8mm Flm Look Test

I made this clip just to test the results of how much 8mm film look can I get from shooting the footage with HD and grade it in POST. (for the sake of my new film...) Because I'm still eager to shoot my memory sequences with REAL 8mm, but it's really MISSION IMPOSSIBLE here in KOREA!!! Damn!!

So, I tried to make a Super 8mm film look with After Effect (Shot with Canon 7D, 24p, Canon EF 85mm lens, F1.8, ISO1000), but I really don't know whether I've "made it" or not. So if there are any experts out there, please give me some of your tips and advice. I'd really appreciate it! Thanks a lot! And please enjoy!!

5D Mark II vs 7D (Noise Test Review)

A small test review of 5d mark 2 and 7d in low light performance. All shot was set on ISO 2500, standard image style, and with the use of Canon EF 85mm, F1.8. (no rigs, no color correction)

Over all, the 7D really does have a bit more of noise than the 5D Mark II, especially in the darker area (But it's still a great camera! As long as you use it properly..). Well, we did made a couple of shots with ISO 3200/6400... but trust me! You definitely don't wanna see them. The thing is with these VDSLR cameras is that even though the sharpness of the lenses is important, but above that, you really should manage to have the fastest lenses that you can get (unfortunately, we didn't..). And please remenber try not to go over 25oo(ISO), oh and it's always pleasant to have a F1.2 (all the way to the end) lens, cos then you can play with the depth, and change the shutter speed instead of the apeture, just to make your stuffs a little less like " HOME VIDEO".....

Back In Seoul!

It's great to be back in Seoul (though it's freaking cold now.. =.=")

But I have to say that, this was the BEST Pusan Film Festival that I've attended till now! It was a BLAST! And even though it was a real tough week (from Oct. 8~16), it's still wonderful! So many good things happened there!! Also met so many friends!!

Since I was the MC for Taiwan Cinema Party, and a translator for the Taipei Film Commission, I get to meet so many great people! And that is one thing I'm really grateful about! Especially, I get to know Steve Chicorel, Double Edge producer and director of international distribution, and also a GREAT MAN!! I'm really thankful to him, for giving me an opportunity to work with him, in a professional project! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Meanwhile, besides working on my latest short film project which is suppose to go into shooting process in late November and waiting for the results of several film festivals that I'd submitted for "Hide & Seek", not only now I have to concentrate on this new project which Steve offered, but also have to try do some promotions for "God is D_ad" (a film by Abraham Lim), while Abe is still busy being as a jury in Cinemanila Film Fest.

Slide Show of Nils Clauss's Photo Exhibition in Seoul 09'

This is a little slide show I made for a German Photographer friend Nils Clauss, a photo exhibition in In-Sa dong, Seoul, South Korea. (2009)

INTRODUCTION:

Hukseokdong, Bangbaedong and Sangwangsimnidong: Three city districts with in Seoul. Having a population history of less than 40 years, it is now packed with blocks of family housing and these districts are facing a large-scale apartment construction enterprise. This is not an isolated case in Korea, a country that regards the apartment complex as the premium living form. Since the 70s, the apartment has affected the Korean comprehension of space strongly.

But where will the current inhabitants of the working-class districts move to? Not all residents will obtain a governmental compensation, allowing them to return to the redeveloped area at a later stage. And among those, who will be able to deal with the rent inflation resulting from the new real estate developments? Despite the inhabitants’efforts to fight their forced extrusion through legal means, they are powerless against the building companies. Even the most adamant ones who remain until construction starts eventually succumb to the highly influential companies; almost the entire construction industry in Korea is part of the Chaebol stronghold.

The presented work with the German title ZUGZWANG, meaning to be forced to move, is based on a spatial concept, which indirectly portrays the inhabitants of Hukseokdong, Bangbaedong and Sangwangsimni. The spaces, once frequented, and by the time of the project partly demolished, will illustrate the fate of the displaced residents. Through the forced and in many ways too hasty

evacuation of their homes, traces that characterize the former inhabitants are distinguished.

This presented work was photographed in the period of November 2008 to March 2009.

Director’s Statement

This film is mainly based on the purpose to discuss about “Dream”, “Memory” and “Reality”. People often see these three elements as each individual, but to me, they seem to be just the same. Since “Dream” is the combination result of memory (past), vision (future), fears and desires. While “Memory” refers to the things which belongs in the past, (funny is that, last night’s dream also becomes this morning’s memory). “Reality” is on the present time-line which never stops persueing the future, happiness, goal and “Dream”. On the other hand “Reality” also keeps on making memories and dreams.

The Diamond Sutra carries a simple wisdom and philosophy which happens to lead us towards an ultimate answer for the meaning of life, which say: “Everything perceived will pass away, like a dream, like an illusion, like a bubble, like a shadow, like a dew, and like a lightning. You should think everything as such.” Thus, I would say, “Dream”→“Memory”→“Reality”→“Dream”→“Memory”→“Reality”………

People are constantly in pursuit of economic prosperity, social harmony, a comfortable and happy life, but often at the process in "pursuit of happiness", we seem to get further and further from our goal. Human, are easy to get lost in this world of vagaries, perhaps the only way to pursuit of happiness is to stop our steps, "think opposite", and "walk backwards", just to remind ourselves of how we looked like in the beginning. And then maybe we shall find the true sense of peace and happiness, especially in our hearts. Every footage of this film was organized, shot, edited, and shown on " reverse and rewind" ,as an attempt to gain some sense of realistic and to obtain unexpected results.

Director's Statement
This film is mostly about the social chaos in Taiwan recently, due to political conflicts between the main two parties (Pan Blue & Pan Green = KMT & DPP) that are running the country, and especially the Ma Administration. Corruptions in all areas, such as politics, social, economic, education, culture and diplomat etc, the politicians have forgotten all the promises and visions that they will give to the country for a better future. Instead, they fight constantly for their own “GREEDS” and “PROFITS”, which had caused enormous chaos in Taiwan. Thus, the intent of this film is to remind us, and especially the politicians, who we were and what we wanted in the beginning of everything.
